City staff and a volunteer review committee presented recommendations for the city’s 2025 Special Event Support Program and the council approved the committee’s allocation of the $25,000 program budget among 12 nonprofit applicants.
Senior Management Analyst Heidi DiNardo told the council the program was established under Policy A-31 in 2014 to support local nonprofits’ community events. This year the city received 12 applications requesting a total of $83,425. The committee — comprised of representatives from the four neighborhood councils and the Council on Aging — held two public meetings on Dec. 11 and Dec. 18, heard presentations from applicants and recommended awards to all 12 organizations based on community benefit and local impact.
Councilmembers asked about allocation criteria and noted that committee members sometimes weighed first-hand attendance and community benefit as well as event size and cost. “This is always one of the hardest committees to sit on in the city,” one councilmember said during discussion, praising the committee’s work. The council voted unanimously to adopt the committee’s recommendations and authorized the city manager to execute grant contracts.
Why it matters: The grants use an existing $25,000 annual budget to support local nonprofits whose events provide community benefits; recipients must provide post-event reports per the policy.
