LULAC leader urges clarity on local cooperation with ICE after regional raids

Julio Torres, a local business owner and national vice president of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), told the Tulare City Council on Jan. 21 that recent immigration enforcement actions in neighboring counties had raised concern among Tulare's Latino residents and asked whether the Tulare Police Department would participate in similar operations.
"Our people are concerned," Torres said, noting that Tulare County is majority Latino and asking whether the city or police department would issue a public statement clarifying whether local officers would cooperate with federal immigration enforcement. Torres also congratulated the newly promoted police chief and offered to help coordinate recognition.
City staff acknowledged the concern and said they would coordinate with the city manager and police chief to provide information and a public statement to community leaders. No formal council action was taken.
