Pittsburgh school board delays athletics policy start to 2025-26; reports six expulsions in month

The Pittsburgh Board of Public Education on Wednesday voted to change the implementation date for its policy on Interscholastic Athletics and Extra‑ and Co‑Curricular Activities so the policy will take effect beginning with the 2025–26 school year.

Board member Miss Petroski moved the amendment, citing timing concerns after the policy was posted late in the current semester. "I would like to make a motion that, we just amend the language in this to, for it to take effect, for the 2025, 2026 school year, instead of retroactively, initiating this policy," Petroski said. Miss Wilson seconded the motion. A roll‑call vote approved the amendment unanimously.

The amendment was part of the education committee report submitted by Dr. Tracy Reed. Board President Jean Walker also read the student discipline update for the month: "For the month, 6 students were expelled out of school for 11 or more days," Walker said when presenting agenda item 8.13.

The board noted it had met in executive session earlier on Jan. 22 and immediately prior to the meeting to discuss personnel matters, including administrative vacancies and positions opened and closed; the board does not take votes in executive session.

Board members emphasized the intent of the amendment to give students and families time to acclimate to the new policy rather than apply it retroactively during an already‑underway semester. No changes to the policy text itself were recorded in the meeting beyond the shifted implementation date; the board’s action changed only the effective date.

The education committee report, including the athletics policy amendment and the expulsion numbers, was approved by roll call as presented.

The board closed the legislative portion of the meeting and moved to regular announcements before adjourning. The next monthly legislative meeting was announced to take place the following month.
