PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Public Schools held a virtual agenda review meeting Wednesday, Jan. 22, presenting dozens of proposed grants, consultant contracts, facility projects and policy changes that staff said will be considered at upcoming Board meetings.
The meeting included a Mount Oliver Intermediate Unit payments slate and a large education packet that covered eight grant awards (including grants for girls’ flag football, weight‑room equipment, robotics teams and adaptive equipment), 33 consultant and contracted services items for after‑school and summer programming, and multiple payments and general policy authorizations.
Why it matters: the items on the agenda authorize services and spending that affect student programming, summer compensatory services tied to lost instructional time during the COVID pandemic, building repairs and technology upgrades.
Key education items presented included grant awards to support athletics and technical programs at several Pittsburgh schools; a long list of consultant contracts for summer and out‑of‑school time programming that administrators said will serve varying numbers of students; and proposed policy revisions to the district’s code of ethics/conflict‑of‑interest policy and to the interscholastic athletics/extracurricular policy.
Business‑finance proposals included grant applications to the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development for Solar for Schools projects at Carrick and the Pittsburgh Classical Gifted Center, roofing and roof restorations at several schools, a proposed 15‑gigabit internet bandwidth contract, and contracts ranging from curriculum purchases to network and phone licensing renewals.
During the agenda review board members asked questions about the size and cost differences among COVID compensatory services contracts and requested additional detail on outreach and eligibility for those programs. Staff said cost differences stem from the scope of services, number of students served and length of the program day.
None of the items on Wednesday’s agenda were voted on at the review; staff presented the proposals for the Board’s legislative consideration. Several items were flagged for further information or revision before formal Board action.
The Board is scheduled to consider the presented items in upcoming legislative sessions; staff said specific contracts, grant acceptances and policy adoptions will be brought forward with final recommendations and supporting materials.
