School committee names subcommittee members after interviews; policy panel seats four

The South Kingstown School Committee interviewed community volunteers for four advisory subcommittees and then voted to appoint the members who were present that evening.

The committee held short interviews with multiple applicants for budget, policy, strategic planning and wellness subcommittees. Applicants described community involvement, relevant professional experience and motivations for service; topics included finance and budgeting, equity and diversity work, policy drafting, and student wellness.

After the interviews and a short deliberation on whether to appoint candidates who were not present, the committee appointed the following people (as announced at the meeting): - Budget subcommittee: Nicole Cortes (appointed; chair noted she was the only applicant present that evening) - Policy subcommittee: Michelle Manning, Brianna Shea, Kateri Collins, Jeanette (Janette/Johnette) Rodriguez - Strategic planning: Laura Urban, Josh Smith - Wellness: Katie Garvin, Lauren Weinstock

A school committee member moved to appoint the named candidates, a second was recorded, and the motion passed.

Committee members discussed the fairness of appointing people who could not attend the interview night. The committee agreed to appoint those who were present and invite others who had applied but were absent to return for interviews at a later meeting before finalizing any additional seats. The committee chair said appointees who were present would be notified that the seats were filled; those who were absent would be invited to interview at a subsequent meeting.

Why it matters: Subcommittees provide public input and oversight on budgets, policy review, strategic planning and student wellness. Filling those panels affects which community voices will consult with the district on priorities and implementation.
