The Tompkins County Department of Planning and Sustainability asked the PEAK Committee to approve a budget adjustment to move NYSERDA Clean Energy Communities grant funds for continued purchase and distribution of portable induction cooktops through the Healthy Neighborhoods program.
Planning staff said the county purchased the first batch of 50 portable induction cooktops and that Healthy Neighborhoods had only about eight units remaining in stock at the time of the meeting. The budget adjustment will move funds from the prior fiscal year into 2025 so staff can order more cooktops as the program continues to roll out. “We've been buying these cooktops in stages, mainly because of storage,” said Haley Delisle, Department of Planning and Sustainability.
Committee members asked about program pace and quantity. Staff replied that the initial procurement and distribution were constrained by program capacity; Healthy Neighborhoods manages distribution and requires an application process to receive a cooktop. Staff also cited health benefits from electrification and recent public discussion about indoor air quality associated with gas stoves.
The committee voted unanimously to approve the budget adjustment.
Ending: Department staff said they would place additional orders to replenish the Healthy Neighborhoods stock and return to PEAK if any scope or funding changes are needed.
