Elwood board appoints Peter Bell as ex officio student board member

The Elwood Union Free School District Board of Education on Aug. 28 appointed Peter Bell as its ex officio student board member for the 2025–26 school year and formally administered the oath of office.
The board adopted a resolution appointing Bell, elected by the John Glenn High School student body as all-school president, to a term beginning 08/28/2025 and ending 06/30/2026. The resolution says Bell may attend regular board meetings, participate in discussions and offer recommendations but “shall not have the right to vote nor attend executive sessions.” The board voted 4-0 to approve the resolution.
At the dais Bell repeated an oath affirming he would “faithfully serve as the ex officio student board member of the Elwood Union Free School District’s Board of Education” in accordance with the U.S. and New York State constitutions, state law and district policy. Bell told trustees he was “honored to be the ex officio student board member” and said he would keep the board and community updated on student activities and “communicate the sentiments and perspectives of my fellow students.”
Board members and administrators welcomed Bell and emphasized that he will receive training for the role. During discussion, trustees confirmed an ex officio training is offered specifically for student board members and that Bell had signed up for it. Trustees also encouraged Bell to balance his board participation with academic and athletic obligations and said he may leave meetings early if necessary.
The board made the appointment by motion, second and a unanimous voice vote. The administration will provide the student with orientation and board-procedure training as noted in the resolution.
