Ulster County committee members on Feb. 10 discussed the county’s electrical licensing reciprocity with neighboring municipalities after receiving complaints from electricians about the lack of reciprocal agreements with the City of Kingston.
What staff said A Department of Public Works representative explained the law permits reciprocal agreements when the other jurisdiction has an equal or stronger licensing program. The county requires an annual refresher class as part of relicensing; the City of Kingston does not require the refresher class, and that difference is the stated reason the county has not granted reciprocity.
Committee discussion Legislator Kovacs said he had received complaints from electricians who said they could be licensed in Kingston after passing an exam but then face hurdles working in Ulster County. Several members suggested possible remedies: encourage Kingston to adopt a refresher class, offer county refresher classes to outside electricians, or pursue reciprocity agreements where program equivalency can be demonstrated.
Next steps Members asked staff and the county’s licensing board representative to continue the conversation with Kingston and report back to the committee on possible solutions.
