Senate Budget Committee advances FY2025 resolution after partisan markup dominated by border and defense priorities

The Senate Budget Committee on Thursday voted to report a Republican-drafted fiscal 2025 budget resolution after a daylong markup that centered on funding for immigration enforcement and the military and sharp disagreement about proposed program cuts.

Chairman Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican, opened the markup saying the measure would "allow $75,000,000,000 to be spent to secure our border, dollars $150,000,000,000 to be spent to increase our military capability, about $20,000,000,000 I think for the Coast Guard." Graham said the plan would instruct committees to identify reconciliation‑compliant offsets and emphasized urgency tied to enforcement needs.

Sen. Patty Murray, the committee’s top Democrat, framed her opposition in stark terms, saying the resolution "contains $9,000,000,000,000 in cuts to programs for working families" and warned the resolution would open the door to cuts to Medicaid, food assistance and other safety‑net programs.
