Student board member, superintendent outline fall events, budget forum and anti-bias work

Peter Bell, the student representative to the Elwood Union Free School District Board of Education, summarized fall activities at the district’s schools and the recent training he attended for ex officio student board members.
Bell reported on kindergarten orientation at Harley Avenue, back-to-school nights at multiple schools, a middle-school social scheduled for Sept. 19 and John Glenn High School’s homecoming events on Sept. 27. He noted a new electronic-device policy at the high school that staff say has increased engagement.
“Students showed their school pride,” Bell said as he listed spirit week events and a planned float build. He also described his participation in statewide student ex officio board member training, which included speakers from the New York State Board of Regents and the state education commissioner.
Dr. Steele, the district superintendent, told the board that the district plans to host a budget reflection and future-planning forum in October to explain adjustments made after last year’s budget and to solicit community input. Steele said the district will publicize the forum with postcards, outreach to daycare/UPK centers, civic associations and on the schools’ website and social media.
Steele also reported that Elwood participated in the first Huntington anti-bias task force meeting of the school year and that the district will host an in-person Social Justice Ambassador meeting in January. He encouraged community participation in upcoming back-to-school nights and the homecoming parade.
Board members commended Bell’s report and the district’s outreach plans.
