Gates Chili board hears progress report on 'Building Brighter Futures' capital project

The Gates Chili Central School District Board of Education received a progress update on the district's 2022 capital improvement program, known as the Building Brighter Futures project, focusing this month on the final middle school music space and Phase 2 site and building work.
District project staff reported that Phase 1 work — which included the district office, high school and technology spaces — is substantially complete and that work in the middle school music area is ongoing. Contractors from DCI, the district's general contractor, have installed roof metal decking and begun foam insulation. Interior masonry and metal stud walls are in place, and a large air handler has been installed in a mezzanine to serve the space, district staff said.
The update covered Phase 2 progress at the athletic complex and elementary buildings. Officials said the new baseball turf field is complete and will undergo a final inspection; grading and seating work around both fields is about 50% finished and sidewalk paving is under way. At Florence Brasser Elementary (referred to as Brasser in the presentation), contractors completed the main office and nurse cabinetry so those spaces were operational when school opened; demolition has started in the old nurse and art-room areas where new staff offices and other rooms will be built. Contractors have framed roofs for four dugouts and continued electrical, mechanical and plumbing installations across sites.
Phase 3 work is limited to bathroom construction to serve the middle school fields; demolition is scheduled to start in October with a target turnover in the spring, staff said.
On budget, the presentation listed figures for each phase: roughly $20,500,000 for Phase 1, with the phase described as about 83% built; Phase 2 listed at $16,000,000 and about 74% built; Phase 3 contracts were described as just under $600,000 with a contingency of about $1,600,000. The presentation also referred to allowances and contingency spending but some dollar amounts in the slide text were not fully legible in the meeting handout, which staff said they could clarify if board members requested detail.
Board members asked no substantive questions during the presentation; staff showed photographs of the baseball and softball fields, the middle school music space under construction, and renovated main office and nurse suites at Brasser. The board received the report with no formal action required.
The district noted short-term impacts: the district office main entrance (Door 73) remains closed while a new canopy is installed and a weekend closure for parking-lot paving is planned (weather permitting).
