District staff provided routine school reports Feb. 13, announcing new hires, student activities and construction updates, and a board member publicly raised concerns about leadership at Arnold Springs School.
In school reports, district speakers noted the district's eighth graders attended a county college and career fair featuring more than 45 vendors; the district welcomed Robbie Phillips as a behavioral intervention therapist assigned to multiple grade levels; and Cassandra Abbott was introduced as a GEAR UP advisor who will follow a cohort until graduation. The district said construction of the new CTE building at Clay County High School is scheduled to begin when weather permits and is expected to be complete by August, though the district noted weather could delay the schedule.
Athletics and student recognition items included announcements of CCHS valedictorian Aaron Meadows and salutatorian Cooper Bailey, and a student (Nate Adams) joining the 1,000-point scoring club in basketball. Staff also described professional development for teachers on preventing discrimination, bullying, harassment and intimidation.
Superintendent-level and staff updates included a note that 13 inclement-weather days have been used so far; the district has two remote-learning days available and may apply to the state to seek forgiveness for certain days that occurred during a state of emergency.
During new business, board member Upton said parents and faculty at Arnold Springs School had asked him to raise concerns about "a lack of consistency, a lack of clarity, and most importantly, a lack of decisiveness in guiding issues" at that school. The board member said the concerns began before Thanksgiving and asked that the board be prepared to address them if parents provide details. The chair encouraged those with concerns to bring specific issues to the district so staff can respond.
No formal action on Arnold Springs leadership was taken at the meeting; the matter was raised publicly and the board invited constituents to provide more detailed information so staff can follow up.
