Hospice of Amador and Calaveras County held its sixteenth annual Take a Chance on Love Valentine’s Day drawing at the hospice thrift store in Jackson, California, awarding eight donated prizes and raising a little more than $12,000 to support hospice services.
The event, emceed by Joe Eguidi of KVGC, drew donors and staff from Hospice of Amador and Calaveras County. Sam, the hospice executive director, summarized the purpose of the funds: “It ensures that we can't turn anybody down for hospice services, and we don't we never do. So it it goes a long way to make sure that everybody gets the services that they deserve.” Missy Justice, director of community relations for the hospice, thanked ticket buyers and the community for their support.
The drawing awarded eight prizes donated by local businesses and individuals. Prize highlights and winners named on the broadcast included: a whitewater rafting trip for two donated by Orr's Angels Camp (winner: Julia Shelby); a one-hour scenic airplane ride for two departing Calaveras County Airport donated by Rob and Linda Davids (winner: David Carlson); a golf package with a private tasting donated by Sequoia Woods Country Club and Greenhorn Creek Resort (winner: Jolene Reynaero); a 40-foot Super Cruiser rental for a full day on New Meloney's Lake donated by New Maloney's Lake Marina (winner: Paul Molinelli Jr.); a two-night stay at Seascape Beach Resort in Aptos donated by Wayne Garibaldi (listed winner: KBGC); a seven-night stay at The Sea Ranch donated by Karen Dickerson (listed winner: KBGC); a London blue topaz and diamond bracelet (winner: Karen Amy); and the grand prize, a complete living-trust package (winner: Murphy's Angels Lions) donated by Burton and Sweat.
Ticket sales were $10 per ticket; organizers reported total proceeds of “a little over $12,000.” Missy Justice noted that the funds are used to ensure hospice care is available to anyone in the service area regardless of ability to pay. The grand-prize living-trust package was described on-air as including a last will and testament, a revocable trust, power of attorney, an advance health-care directive, HIPAA waivers and one trust transfer deed; the on-air value given for that prize was $2,375.
Organizers named individual donors and local businesses on the broadcast and displayed several prizes during the livestream. Joe Eguidi and hospice staff thanked the community for ongoing support and KVGC for streaming the event. The broadcast did not specify a final, audited total beyond the reported “a little over $12,000,” nor did it provide a final count of tickets sold.
The drawing concluded with organizers noting the funds support hospice programs and end-of-life care in Amador County and neighboring areas.
