FCPS staff report AI work group and interim guidance as board-level policy work continues

Frederick County Public Schools staff told the Citizens Advisory Council on Feb. 10 that the district has convened a work group to examine instructional uses, privacy and safety related to artificial intelligence and that interim guidance was shared with cabinet for teacher use.
Dr. Jamie Alovito, FCPS chief of schools and accountability, said leaders reviewed interim guidance in cabinet and are preparing materials staff can use quickly while a fuller policy is developed. "We just reviewed interim guidance today in cabinet. Get some feedback from our education reform council and our principals advisory council, that we can get that in the hands of teachers," she said.

Alovito said the district’s work group includes the curriculum office and the department of technology infrastructure to address both instructional opportunities and safety/privacy concerns.
Members said parents across the state report limited understanding of AI, and several CAC participants said state-level reviewers have urged districts to adopt policies rather than wait for external guidance. Committee members and staff emphasized that any formal policy will be iterative: initial statements should communicate priorities and guardrails while staff finish technical guidance. The district also explored using AI tools to generate drafts (participants noted the district experimented with AI to produce a starting policy draft), but warned those drafts require human review and vetting.
Ending: Staff said they will continue the work-group process and bring a draft policy stance for board consideration; in the meantime the district will circulate interim guidance for principals and teachers.
