The Green Bay Police and Fire Commission on Feb. 13 voted to enter closed session and reviewed candidate backgrounds and conducted interviews for firefighter and patrol officer positions, then reported decisions in open session.
The commission convened the meeting, conducted roll call and approved the agenda before voting to enter closed session under Wis. Stat. § 19.85(1)(c) and (f). "So moved," said Commissioner Dorff as the motion was made; a second was recorded from Commissioner Boyle Rohloff and the commission voted in favor.
In open session after the closed meeting, Commissioner Dorff reported the commission had completed its three closed-session agenda items. For the firefighter background reviews, the commission reviewed seven candidate backgrounds, rejected three candidates after the background investigations and continued four candidates in the hiring process.
For patrol officer background reviews, the commission reviewed five candidate backgrounds. One candidate withdrew after accepting a position with another jurisdiction; the commission rejected two candidates and continued two in the hiring process. The commission also conducted interviews with two patrol officer candidates in closed session and chose to continue both candidates in the hiring process.
Commissioner Dorff moved to approve the written report of the closed-session outcomes; Commissioner Lauzt seconded the motion and the commission recorded the approval. The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn that carried by voice vote.
The commission did not announce additional public dates or specific next steps for the candidates during the open session report. No names of candidates were released in the public report, and no further details about the reasons for rejections were disclosed in open session.
