The Jennings County High School esports team presented its first-year results to the school board, describing competitive play, community sponsorships and measurable academic and attendance improvements tied to program participation.
"We saw a 12.8% increase in our grade averages from '23 to '24," said Dylan Hubbell, the team's captain, summarizing data the team shared. The students also reported a decrease of 35 absences across the measured semester. Team members credited program accountability and academic eligibility standards established by staff for those gains.
The team detailed competitive results and partnerships: a probationary club season with the Indiana Esports Network, a partnership with Ball State University for coaching support, and a varsity schedule that included matches against Hobart, Scottsburg, Norwell and Mount Vernon (Columbia City forfeited a scheduled match). Presenters said the varsity record stood at 4-1 and that all teams in the league make the playoffs, with seeding determined by regular-season records.
Administrators noted items the team has secured for the program: donated desks from Branch Furniture, jerseys financed by local sponsorships (Expert Eye Care, Martinrea and A Step Ahead Pediatric Therapies), and publicity including an article in The Plain Dealer. The team plans charitable streaming events (Extra Life) to raise funds for Norton Children's Hospital in Louisville.
Board members praised the students and coaches for the program's early success and student benefits. No formal board action was required or taken on the presentation.
