Pittsylvania school board approves staff personnel changes, student release and sick-leave waiver

The Pittsylvania County School Board voted Feb. 13 to approve several personnel actions, including a request to release a student from Chatham High School, the dismissal of a classified staff member as discussed in closed session, and routine personnel changes.

The board also approved a request from John Wagstaff to waive the limits in school board policy GCBFB-PC (volunteer donation of sick leave days) so Wagstaff may use up to 20 additional voluntary donated sick days for the 2024–25 school year if those days are received. The motion to waive the policy limit was approved by roll call.

Board members moved and seconded the motions in open session following certification of actions taken in closed meeting. Roll-call votes recorded the following pattern: Mister Fitzgerald, Miss Henderson, Miss Merrick, Mister Moon, Miss Shields and Mister Dolls voted yes on the motions reported at the meeting; Mister Mills was recorded as absent.

The actions came during a meeting that opened with certification of closed-session actions; the board did not discuss additional specifics of the closed-session personnel matter in public beyond the vote outcome.

Board clerks recorded the motions as: approval of the student release, approval of the dismissal of the classified staff member as discussed, approval of the personnel changes for Feb. 13, 2025, and approval of the waiver request for donated sick leave for the 2024–25 school year.
