School Committee approves 2025–26 program of studies for Hopkinton High and Middle schools

The Hopkinton School Committee on Feb. 13 approved updated programs of studies for Hopkinton High School (2025–26) and Hopkinton Middle School, adopting new courses and several curricular refinements.

At the high school, presenters described four new elective offerings approved for next year: a digital citizenship and media literacy class (open to grades 9–12), an embedded programming introductory computer science course, "Sport in American History" as a history elective (grades 10–12), and a "Literature of Leadership" English elective (grades 10–12). Administrators said the digital citizenship course — taught by the library media specialist — will address social media, AI, privacy, online research and mental health topics. The committee also approved adding competency determination language to the program of studies, formally listing an existing work‑study option under alternative pathways, and retaining MCAS‑remediation courses for students who need them.

Hopkinton Middle School's program of studies received smaller changes: a refresh to the principal's introductory letter, additions to grade‑level reading lists (several new novel titles for grades 7 and 8), and sequencing clarifications in the math department to improve curricular flow.

Motion and votes: The committee moved and approved the Hopkinton High School 2025–26 program of studies (motion by James; second by Kyla) and, later in the meeting, moved and approved the Hopkinton Middle School program of studies (motion by Susan; second by Kyla). Both motions passed by voice vote.

Administrators said there are no immediate budget increases tied to the course additions; classes will run only if student enrollment supports them.
