Madison County supervisors authorize demolition of damaged Hoover Ridge barn

Madison County supervisors voted to authorize county administration to demolish the Hoover Ridge Barn after county staff described recent structural damage that followed a heavy snowfall.
County staff said the barn’s A-frame portion partially collapsed during the snowfall and that staff and an engineering contractor inspected the building and advised the county that the structure is unsafe. "Staff's recommending that the Board of Supervisors authorized county administration to move forward with the demolition of the Hoover Ridge Barn and begin exploring cost to construct a new maintenance [building] at the location," a county staff presenter said.
The recommendation followed an on-site inspection by a contracted professional engineer who works with the county’s Hoover Ridge project, and the county submitted an insurance claim. Staff said the insurer provided a lump-sum payout estimate and is reviewing additional items the county submitted for reimbursement, including safety fencing installed around the damaged structure.
Board members discussed replacement options and initial cost expectations in broad terms. One supervisor said the existing barn has no historic designation and recommended demolition and replacement; another urged Parks and Recreation be consulted on dimensions and siting for a new structure. Supervisors discussed keeping a replacement building close to the current footprint and constructing a concrete slab and basic shell rather than a fully finished facility.
The board approved a motion to authorize the county administrator to proceed with demolition and to begin exploring replacement costs. The motion passed by voice vote with no recorded dissents.
Next steps identified by staff include completing the demolition procurement, refining construction cost estimates for a new maintenance building, and returning to the board with design options and budget estimates for consideration.
The board’s action did not include a finalized budget appropriation for demolition or construction; staff said they would present cost estimates and procurement steps for future board decisions.
