Planning commission sets 2025 priorities: mini-warehouses and entrance-corridor standards top list; comp-plan review to proceed chapter by chapter

At the Feb. 13 meeting, the Planning Commission discussed its 2025 work plan and agreed to prioritize (1) mini-warehouse (self-storage) design standards and (2) a fuller review and update of entrance-corridor standards, followed by townhouse standards, planned-unit development rules, and a five-year comprehensive-plan review.
Staff presented a prioritized list of outstanding items carried over from the commission’s 2020 work program and described the rationale for the schedule. Commissioners characterized mini-warehouse standards as a relatively quick project — staff has model language identified — to require stronger site design, paving, landscaping and buffering rather than allowing single-story block units with minimal screening. Entrance-corridor work was described as broader and more time-consuming; it could include sign standards, driveway/curb-cut rules, inter-parcel access standards, landscaping and lighting.
On the comprehensive plan, commissioners endorsed a practical approach: staff will prepare a working table that lists each action or strategy and indicates whether it is started, ongoing, finished or not started. The commission agreed to review individual plan chapters at subsequent meetings (one chapter per meeting when time permits), using the status table to guide whether amendments are needed. Commissioners noted the comp plan’s five-year review cycle and suggested this approach readies the commission for any council direction.
The commission asked staff to provide a draft mini-warehouse standard and sign-measure metrics for the entrance corridor as near-term tasks. Commissioners signaled interest in chunking work into discrete tasks so shorter projects can be completed quickly and more-complex ones scheduled appropriately.
