Senate Education Committee schedules high school site visit, asks members to review superintendent materials

Gladys, a member of the Senate Education Committee, said the committee plans to begin next week with a site visit to a high school and asked members to review materials provided by superintendents and complete confirmation paperwork.

The committee is preparing next steps after a multi-committee hearing and follow-up briefings that included funders and a consultant. Gladys said the panel will "start next week" with a site visit and that members should "read the materials that the superintendents gave to us." The committee also was told to "start doing your confirmation work," which Gladys said could lead to taking confirmations the following week depending on scheduling.

Committee members were asked to refine questions raised during recent meetings, focusing on what the group called "optimal" and backup options for district size, school size and class size. Gladys described those three items as the "fundamental" issues the committee needs to address going forward.

On scheduling, members discussed traveling together to the site. A target window of about two hours in the afternoon was mentioned, with a goal to be at the site in the early afternoon; Gladys said organizers set a 2:00–3:30 p.m. goal for the visit so members would have time to get there. She noted the schedule remained a work in progress and that organizers were coordinating additional participants to speak with the committee.

The meeting closed with logistical reminders: members were asked to do homework on the superintendent materials and to finalize confirmations so they could be handled promptly. Gladys concluded by reminding members the committee would reconvene on Tuesday to continue planning and the group flagged an early dismissal at 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
