Pierre — The South Dakota Senate on Feb. 12 confirmed key executive appointments during floor session, including Joseph L. Fiala as Commissioner of the Governor's Office of Economic Development (GOED) and appointments to the State Brand Board.
The Senate advised and consented to Jesse Longbrake's appointment to the State Brand Board; the roll call was 35 yeas and 0 nays. Senator Roll introduced Longbrake, citing his lifetime experience with horses and cattle in Ziebach County and support for improvement at the Brand Board.
The Senate also confirmed Joseph L. Fiala as GOED commissioner by a 35-0 vote after Senator Crabtree described Fiala's 13 years at GOED and prior municipal experience in Miller.
The reappointment of Scott Vance to the State Brand Board was confirmed by roll call with 29 yeas and 6 nays. Senator Marty summarized Vance's qualifications, noting prior leadership at the Faith Livestock Commission Company, involvement with livestock industry groups and as brand-board president.
Earlier in the session the Senate approved a consent calendar that included additional reappointments to the Board of Economic Development (Reed Kessler, Sharon Casey, Thomas Jones) and several uncontested bills; those consent calendar items passed with a roll-call tally of 35 yeas, 0 nays.
