Students describe Unity Day plans focused on inclusivity and mental-health activities

Student representatives and Hope Squad members told the board about a full-day Unity Day scheduled Feb. 12, including an address by Tasha Hsu, activities, and a free T‑shirt for students; phone rules, lunch timing, and school rules will remain in effect.
Taylor, student representative, told the board that Unity Day will be held Wednesday and described the schedule and activities planned by Hope Squad and Student Council.
“We are so excited to be able to provide a free unity day t shirt to every SHS student,” Taylor said, and she noted that the day will include a speaker, Tasha Hsu, who will talk about “overcoming challenges and improving mental health.”
Hope Squad presenters explained that the month’s theme is inclusivity and that classroom activities will include a teacher-led word-cloud exercise, bracelet making, board games, calming-and-coping strategies, arts and crafts and sports options. Students will receive schedules during fourth hour and are expected to attend assigned activities. Presenters emphasized that regular school rules will continue to apply, including restrictions on phone use during the day.
A Hope Squad presenter summarized the theme: “Inclusivity is the practice of providing equal respect, value, and access to opportunities and resources for people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized,” and described plans to create and display word clouds around the school after classes complete the activity.
Student leaders said they conducted a student survey about concerns and celebrations at the high school and will meet with Principal Fezzy to review results and report back to the board at a future meeting.
Board members answered questions and thanked the students for organizing Unity Day and other student activities, including a blood drive and Winterfest events.
