Commission approves $48,087.90 purchase to replace water reclamation filter media

The Hays City Commission authorized the purchase of replacement filter media for the city's water reclamation and reuse facility on Feb. 13, voting to spend $48,087.90 from the facility's projects line.
Jeff Crispin, director of water resources, explained the city's filter system contains 504 polyester panels that have reached the end of their useful life after routine cleaning, which increases run times and can cause "blinding" where water cannot pass through the media. He said the supplier, Evoca Water Technologies, now offers stainless-steel media that the vendor estimates will serve as a roughly 10-year solution for this specific unit. "You can't just buy it from anybody," Crispin said; the city uses the approved sole-source vendor because the parts are unit-specific.
Crispin asked the commission to authorize the $48,087.90 purchase; the motion was made by Commissioner Buick, seconded by Commissioner Musil, and approved on a voice vote. Staff said the purchase will be funded from the projects line in the water reclamation and reuse operating budget.
