The Mountain View Whisman School District Board of Trustees unanimously adopted a resolution on Feb. 13 reaffirming the district’s support for students and families in the context of immigration enforcement.
The resolution, identified in board discussion as resolution number 2‑20‑1325 (as presented at the meeting), restates that the district will not permit immigration enforcement officers on campus except where a signed judicial warrant is presented or exigent circumstances exist. The resolution also affirms that schools will not release personally identifiable student information for immigration enforcement without parental consent, a court order or a judicial subpoena, and it notes Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protections.
Trustee Conley introduced the resolution and Trustee Connolly moved approval. Trustee Reid seconded the motion. The board voted "aye" on a unanimous voice vote and the president declared the measure adopted.
Why it matters: The resolution clarifies district protocol and aims to reassure immigrant students and families that the district will assert statutory protections within the limits of the law. It also references a prior district resolution the board adopted in 2017 on safe, secure, and equal access to public education.
