Newly appointed coroner reports transition progress, staff appointments and training

The newly appointed Shelby County coroner provided an office update at the Feb. 13 Shelby County Board meeting, describing administrative work since taking office Jan. 12 and listing personnel and training changes.
The coroner said the office completed Freedom of Information Act and Open Meetings Act training and an Illinois harassment training. Files from the courthouse were moved into the coroner’s office and staff have been organizing records and clearing a backlog of chain-of-custody paperwork; some completed records were returned to the McLean County coroner’s office to ensure continuity.
The coroner said three deputy coroners from the prior administration were retained: Travis Boyer, Travis Beard and Paige Spies Ludwig. The coroner also said three additional deputy coroners have been added: Cliff Miller (described in the meeting as having 20 years’ experience as a firefighter-paramedic), Chad Ratville (city police chief; identified in meeting as added deputy), and Paul Bennett (city police sergeant). The coroner and Cliff Miller are scheduled to attend coroner training in March.
The coroner thanked several county and regional officials who assisted during the transition: Fayette County Coroner David Harris, Moultrie County Coroner Lynn Reed, Jack and Veil Yockey, Aaron Hogg, Sheriff Brian McReynolds, county deputies and dispatchers, Treasurer Fern Huber’s office, and County Clerk Joseph Fox and staff.
The coroner reported the office has been addressing organizational and paperwork backlogs and said the transition has been collaborative with regional coroners and county offices. No formal policy changes or binding board actions were reported in this update.
