Commission staff said the structure remains standing and that interim protection has so far prevented demolition. Staff described a likely scenario in which the house would be temporarily moved to a nearby parcel, remain in storage while quarrying and remediation occur, then be moved to a permanent site and restored. Staff also said the parks department’s proposed role was to accept ownership of the parcel from Martin Marietta for a future park and that the adjacent private owner had expressed willingness to accept a permanent protection covenant on the relocated house.
Commissioners discussed whether 30 days would be sufficient and debated a longer 60-day extension. Some members argued a firm 30-day deadline would “light a fire” under the parties and provide clarity for Martin Marietta; others worried a short deadline might not allow time to arrange house movers, select a temporary storage site or finish legal reviews by attorneys.
Commissioners moved and seconded a motion to extend interim protection 30 days; the motion carried with no recorded nays. Staff said the parties would be asked to report back at the commission’s next meeting; staff also said they would attempt to notify the adjacent property owner and parks staff and ask them to attend the March meeting if an agreement was still outstanding.
Why it matters: the Wise House dates to about 1850 and is identified by staff as an early settler-era property in Clay Township. Interim protection prevents immediate demolition and gives negotiators time to pursue relocation and preservation remedies.
