Commissioners approve $8,946 grant application request for county Historic Landmarks Commission

The Deschutes County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 12 voted unanimously to authorize staff to apply for the 2025–26 Certified Local Government (CLG) historic preservation grant. Tanya Saltzman, senior planner in community development and staff liaison to the Historic Landmarks Commission (HLC), described the $8,946 request as primarily intended to fund training (including the Oregon Heritage Conference) and support materials for the HLC and the City of Sisters’ initiatives.
Saltzman explained the grant is a federal pass‑through from the National Park Service via the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). She told the board the grant requires a 1:1 match that the county will meet with staff time rather than a cash match: “That is not a check that the county is writing, it is just a staff time,” Saltzman said.
Commissioners expressed support for investing in training for the newly reconstituted HLC and for it being a cost‑effective way to build local capacity for local historic preservation review. The motion to authorize submission of the application passed with the chair and both commissioners voting yes.
Next steps: If the application is successful the county will return to the board for any grant award documents and will carry out the grant activities, including training and documentation updates, through the following grant cycle.
