The committee voted to file a petition from residents asking for truck restrictions on Holden Street and approved a chairman’s order directing the Department of Transportation and Mobility to conduct a truck study of the corridor.
Susan Loring, a longtime Holden Street resident, told the committee she and neighbors have seen “large trailer truck traffic” near their homes that rattles windows and passes through a heavily residential area. Commissioner Steve Raleigh explained that an overnight truck ban has lower thresholds but that any 24‑hour truck ban or weight restriction requires a study and approval by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT). Raleigh said the department can run initial analyses from its historical speed and volume database and then perform on‑the‑ground manual counts in peak seasons if the preliminary results warrant it.
Councillors unanimously authorized filing the petition and asked DTM to start a study; they also approved a chairman’s order to study the whole length of Holden Street rather than only the petitioned segment. The committee noted the MassDOT review step will be required if a ban is pursued.
