Committee approves solar flashing crosswalk at Burnco Street and Arbutus Road

The Parking & Traffic Committee voted to approve installation of solar‑powered rapid flashing beacons at the crosswalk on Burnco Street at Arbutus Road, a location near the Quinsigamond Community College entrance that residents said has heavy pedestrian use and drivers who frequently fail to stop.
Resident Deborah Tao said drivers often ignore pedestrians trying to use the crosswalk and that students and QCC visitors regularly cross there. Commissioner Steve Raleigh said the Burnco Street reconstruction project is nearly complete and that four rapid flashing beacons will be installed elsewhere in the corridor this spring; he recommended adding the requested beacon at Arbutus because of increased pedestrian activity following completion of pedestrian links behind QCC.
Committee Chair Donna Colorio moved to accept the recommendation; the motion passed by unanimous roll call. Raleigh said installation will proceed as part of spring corridor work and is subject to available funding.
