Justin, staff member, Utah League of Cities and Towns, said the league tracked 35 new bills this week and is monitoring about 232 bills as the Legislative Policy Committee (LPC) prepares for what staff described as a "pretty slammed agenda."
The update, delivered during a midweek recap, emphasized that the legislative session is accelerating and many measures move quickly through committees and the floor. "This week alone, we have tracked 35 new bills," Justin said. He added that the league saw 24 bills in committee on the day of the update and that roughly 784 bills had been drafted between the House and Senate, not including resolutions.
Carson, staff member, Utah League of Cities and Towns, previewed LPC's agenda and said the committee plans to use its next meeting to focus on items that have received limited prior attention. "At LPC, we will have, once again, a pretty slammed agenda," Carson said. He noted that the committee aims to spend more time on housing, elections, gravel pits and public safety and that there is substitute language and new bills on several of those issues.
League staff urged municipal members to watch nightly emails and be prepared to act quickly on bills that surface with little advance notice. Justin said members may be called on to testify at committee or take positions on the floor, and he asked members to notify the league of bills they want prioritized or explained.
Logistics noted at the meeting: staff asked members not to come to the Capitol on Monday because it is President's Day, and confirmed LPC will meet on Tuesday.
