The nominees are Somari Duncan and Elizabeth Mueller. Mueller addressed the board during the meeting and said she did not support restricting books in the library; she described herself as a parent and said she wanted families to make those decisions.
Commissioner Prizia said she initially intended to nominate Duncan but, after hearing Mueller’s remarks, moved to forward both candidates to the library board; a second was placed and the motion carried by voice vote. The board may forward up to three nominees to the trustees for final appointment; the trustees will select from the forwarded applicants.
During the exchange, commissioners clarified process questions about whether the board could send one or multiple nominees; staff confirmed the board may forward one to three candidates to the library board of trustees. The library board meets on the second and fourth Thursday of the month (with schedule adjustments noted), and if additional applicants are submitted the board could consider them before forwarding nominees to the trustees.
The motion carried by voice vote; the names were entered into the public record for the trustees’ consideration.
