Whitnall High senior Sadie Rios honored after Team USA selection

Whitnall High School senior Sadie Rios was recognized by the Whitnall School District Board of Education on Feb. 10 after being named to Team USA’s synchronized skating squad and for recent international medals.
The board noted Rios has skated since age 4 and joined synchronized skating at 6. Board members said Rios’s team, the Fond du Lac Blades, is one of nine in the United States and the only team from Wisconsin. The presentation noted the team earned a silver at the Britannia Cup in the U.K. and placed fourth at the French Cup, and that Rios will compete at nationals in Colorado Springs in March.
Board members singled out Rios’s combination of competitive success and strong academics. In recognition of her record, the district said Rios received the U.S. Figure Skating Platinum Level Achievement Award for seniors who excel in training and academics. The recognition also referenced college prospects she is considering, including the University of Tennessee, Penn State and Michigan State.
Asked what advice she would give to student-athletes, Rios said, “Really just stay on top of all your homework, and talk to your teachers. A lot of my teachers are really understanding about, like, the bridal, and they help me get my work done. So really just, like, study hard.”
The board applauded Rios and thanked her for coming to the meeting. The district did not take any formal action during the recognition.
Rios’s recognition took place during the student-recognition portion of the agenda, before the district’s winter screening presentation and capital-project update.
