Leon County’s economic development directors told commissioners at the retreat that the county has made measurable progress toward its five‑year economic goals and is pursuing several industry and marketing tools to accelerate investment.
Pete/Keith Bowers (Office of Economic Vitality) reported the county has added more than 19,000 jobs since 2022 and that, as of December 2024, Amazon employed 1,921 full‑time workers in Leon County with an average reported salary of roughly $41,500. “That adds up to approximately $80 million in annual wages,” staff said, and noted that more than 42 percent of Amazon employees live in several core zip codes on the county’s South Side, a point staff cited as evidence of the county’s efforts to increase economic equity.
Staff also highlighted Ignite Tallahassee, the county’s newly rebranded high‑tech incubator (formerly North Florida Innovation Lab), which opened in October 2024 and is projected in staff materials to support 100 entrepreneurs, create up to 600 jobs and produce an estimated $66 million economic impact over time. The office also described an active “strategic sites” program — an inventory and marketing package for industrial and commercial sites targeted to site selectors and C‑suite decision makers.
A near‑term, high‑visibility opportunity is the Motor Drive Systems and Magnetics (MDSM) conference, scheduled for Feb. 18–20, 2025 in Tallahassee. Staff said the event typically rotates and the county successfully secured the meeting; organizers expect about 400 industry attendees. Commissioners urged an “all‑hands” local marketing effort to use the conference as a recruitment tool. Commissioner Minor recommended aggressive city‑ and countywide welcome and signage and suggested turning the conference into an annual draw.
Why it matters: staff framed the combination of major employer hires, entrepreneurship space and targeted conferences as complementary tools to attract cluster investment in advanced manufacturing and research‑intensive firms. Commissioners asked staff to return implementation options quickly so the county can leverage the MDSM conference as a business recruitment platform.
Ending: Commissioners directed staff to prepare follow‑up materials and, in the retreat’s initiative bundle, added a recommendation to pursue long‑term outreach to the magnetics industry including consideration of “magnet capital” branding and repeat hosting strategies.
