Evergreen honors school staff, counselors and interventionist with quarterly awards

Evergreen Public Schools recognized support staff and educators at its Feb. 11 board meeting with second‑quarter Evergreen Awards.
Sharon Whitlock, a longtime school secretary at Emerald Elementary, received the classified‑staff award. Principal Darcy Mitchelson praised Whitlock’s dedication, noting her mentorship of other secretaries and small‑but‑meaningful acts of care that make students feel welcome. “Sharon never forgets a family and usually knows something special about each person she comes across,” Mitchelson said.
Sophia Lee, academic interventionist at Evergreen High School, received the certificated‑staff award. Principal Danny Arantia credited Lee for work aimed at improving attendance and ninth‑grade on‑track rates, singling out a rise in Pacific Islander attendance from roughly 33% to 85% over a school year and overall ninth‑grade on‑track rates from about 65% to more than 86% in recent years.
Burton Elementary received a team award for counselors Reyna Luchanwal and Sarah Lang, whose counseling program earned statewide recognition and led to improvements in attendance. School leaders credited the counseling team for a comprehensive, data‑informed approach and noted Burton was one of three schools in Washington to receive RAMP recognition from the American School Counselor Association.
Recipients thanked colleagues, family members and administrators for support during brief remarks and joined the board for photos following the presentations.
