Boone County committee approves $61,641 builder's-risk insurance for courthouse renovation

The Committee of the Whole — Finance approved a builder’s-risk insurance quote of $61,641 for Boone County’s courthouse renovation during its Feb. 13 meeting.
Chairman Carl Johnson asked for a motion to approve the builder’s-risk policy in the stated amount; the motion was moved and seconded and passed on a voice vote. County staff said the approved premium is lower than a prior quote of just over $66,000 after additional conversations with the insurance carrier and after adding alternates to the project scope.
County staff member Ms. Tobin told the committee the cost drivers included the increased construction scope — about $640,000 in alternates that had not been included in the earlier quote — and features of the existing building. “The complexity of the project, how old the building is, the fact that it’s not sprinkled, the entire thing’s not sprinkled adds into that cost,” Tobin said.
Staff said work will begin on site once the coverage is in place; Tobin told the committee contractors will start setting up a construction zone and bring in dumpsters and that demolition is scheduled for March 3.
The committee took the approval forward to the board via voice vote; no roll-call tally was recorded in the transcript.
