Commissioners noted an existing list of veterans receiving some property-related benefit could be a recruiting source.
Chair Pichardo and commissioners said the commission is actively searching for a suitable office space, including a possibility of using an historic building and pursuing federal funds where eligible. The group discussed partnering with the VA regional hospital, federal congressional offices and the mayor’s office to identify resources for services such as housing and veteran support.
Commissioners asked residents interested in serving to contact City Clerk Angela Harris via email at aharris@providenceri.gov; the commission said the city clerk’s office will forward inquiries to the commission for consideration. The commission also referenced a community liaison, Fred McGlynn, who serves as a veterans caseworker for Congressman Gabe Amo, as a potential resource.
The commission asked staff to compile contact lists for veteran organizations, to explore interns at nearby colleges for outreach support, and to report back with a proposed outreach plan at the next meeting.
