Aaron, a city staff member, told the commission the draft bill reflects language the commission reviewed at a prior meeting and that the mayor’s office plans to testify in support. Aaron said the administration has partnered with State Senator Chacon for a companion Senate sponsorship and that the city will monitor committee scheduling and share opportunities for commissioners to testify.
Commissioner Biles moved to enter the handout identified as House bill H 5307 into the record; the motion was seconded and carried. The commission discussed preparing a city council resolution to show local support; Aaron said the resolution will be placed on the upcoming council agenda so the mayor and council can coordinate advocacy and, if the bill passes, the city can have a ready ordinance to set the exemption amount.
Commissioners discussed budget trade-offs and timing. Chair Pichardo noted the city faces revenue challenges and cited the administration’s obligation to provide funds to the Providence public school system; commissioners said the ordinance will include a specific dollar amount only after the council and mayor agree on what the city can afford.
The commission asked staff to circulate the current bill language and to notify members when hearings are scheduled so commissioners may testify with the mayor’s office.
