Owingsville students recognized: STLP projects, cheer team national berth and mock-trial success

At the meeting the Bath County Board of Education recognized several student achievements from across the district.
Owingsville Elementary School’s STLP club presented digital-arts projects including student-made book covers and a screen-capture tutorial; the teacher, Miss Tubbs, introduced students who described their projects and the apps they used. Superintendent Dr. Bailey and board members praised the students’ work.
The board also recognized the Bath County cheer team, which qualified for nationals for the first time in 25 years. Coaches Megan Morton and Madison Neely were named in the presentation and team members were read into the record.
Bath County’s mock-trial team—now in its second year—earned recognition after competing in Covington and taking third place at a regional event. Teacher Ryan Utterback and the students described roles they played and the skills they developed; Mr. Utterback said the program builds public speaking, critical thinking and teamwork.
Why it matters: The student spotlights showcase programs the board supports—STLP (student technology leadership program), athletics and mock-trial—that provide experiential learning outside regular classroom instruction and can influence curriculum and activity funding decisions going forward.
Board reaction and next steps: Trustees congratulated students and coaches and approved travel requests tied to upcoming competitions and events as part of the consent items (for example, BCHS spring training travel and mock-trial state competition travel dates were included in consent items). No board action beyond recognition and previously approved travel/consent items was required.
