Board recognizes GIPS powerlifting teams for state finishes; students, coaches honored

Grand Island — The Grand Island Public Schools Board of Education honored student athletes and coaches Feb. 13 for recent success in powerlifting.
The board welcomed more than 20 powerlifters and coaches to the meeting to recognize both the boys— team state championship at the Nebraska Raw State competition and the girls— team state runner-up finish. Head strength and powerlifting coach Pat Doyle said the program has grown from five participants in his first year to nearly 90 students this season.
"We've never had a team state championship," Doyle told the board, noting the milestone and the program—s rapid growth.
Why it matters: district leaders and board members said the program fosters commitment, expands opportunities for students of different body types and supports growing participation — including more female athletes — at the high school level.
Coaches and student notes
- Pat Doyle, head strength coach, and assistant coach Olmstead were on hand to salute student medalists and to note that about 10 of the team—s lifters were expected to compete at nationals in Wisconsin. - Coach Doyle said the program had 16 individual medalists at state, four individual state champions and two lifters of the meet; roughly 10 of the 20 students mentioned were expected to advance to national competition.
The board and community applauded the athletes. Superintendent and other administrators invited the team forward for certificates and photos and praised coaches for program growth and student development.
