Board declines sponsorship of Voice of San Diego anniversary after split votes
Summary
The Sweetwater Authority board considered sponsoring the Voice of San Diego's 20th‑anniversary event but declined to commit funding after two separate motions (one for a $5,000 community sponsor, one for a $3,500 dessert‑level sponsorship) failed in separate roll calls.

The Sweetwater Authority board discussed a request to sponsor the Voice of San Diego's 20th‑anniversary event, scheduled in late May, and voted twice on possible sponsorship levels before declining to provide funding.
Director Castaneda recused himself from the discussion and left the boardroom. Staff noted the event date (May 29) and summarized sponsorship levels in the packet. Speakers described Voice of San Diego as a nonprofit news organization that recently expanded South Bay coverage; supporters on the board argued sponsorship could help community outreach and media relations.
Board members questioned whether the event and sponsorship met the authority’s Board Policy 5.19, which limits sponsorships to events that are within the authority’s service area and open to the general public and that do not charge an admission fee. Several directors said the event appears to charge admission and is not clearly open to the authority’s full service area, raising policy concerns.
The board first considered a motion to approve a $5,000 community (silver) sponsorship; that motion failed on roll call. A substitute motion for the dessert‑level sponsorship ($3,500) also failed on roll call. With both motions defeated, the authority did not commit any sponsorship funds.
Board members voting against sponsorship cited policy constraints and the need to conserve funds for ongoing programs such as PFAS mitigation work and other capital projects. Directors who supported a sponsorship cited the value of improving media relations and outreach in the South Bay.
No sponsorship was authorized; staff will continue other outreach work and report back on opportunities consistent with board policy.
