City staff reported progress on renovations at the Jenkins Community Center and the commission directed staff to hold a workshop to align programming, operations and facility plans with the commission’s priorities.
Project managers said the right side of the building (phase 1) is expected to be completed by March, with the foyer, gym and offices targeted for May and the final classrooms scheduled for June–July. City staff and contractors said they had shifted sequencing so each phase is completed and inspected before moving on; the contract’s overall completion date remains July 2025. The commission discussed contractor accountability and confirmed contractual liquidated damages/penalties apply if the contractor misses the final completion milestones.
Commissioners requested schematics, occupancy capacity and rental studies in advance of a workshop to ensure the facility’s future uses and pricing align with community needs. Staff said they will provide the renovation schematics, the rental/usage study and an implementation timeline and will schedule a workshop during the week of March 17 to review Jenkins programming and operational options.
Commissioners and staff noted the need for additional flooring work (quotes of $18,000–$26,000 to replace and restore the gym floor substructure) and said they will include those cost estimates in the workshop materials.
