Board grants initial approval for Burnsville student robotics and DECA trips to Houston and Orlando

The District 191 board granted initial approval Feb. 13 for two extended student field trips: the Burnsville High School robotics teams to the FIRST World Championship in Houston, Texas (April 15–20, 2025), and qualifying members of the DECA chapter to attend the DECA International Career Development Conference in Orlando, Florida (April 25–29, 2025).
Robotics coaches Dave Peters and Tanya Peters presented information about the Houston event — a multi‑day international competition that includes setup, practice and multi‑day competition for hundreds of teams — and described outreach and educational opportunities such as tours of NASA facilities. Student speakers and parents said the experience supports STEM careers and networking with industry and alumni. The board gave the robotics trip initial approval by voice vote.
DECA student leaders Asha Mahmood and Cameron Moore presented the chapter’s plans, fundraising strategy and commitment to academic responsibility; trustees approved their initial request by voice vote. Both motions were moved and seconded and carried unanimously. The board said students must follow all district expectations for extended field trips and that staff will continue to present detailed itineraries, risk mitigation and cost/fundraising plans for final approval.
