Superintendent tweaks ABC recommendation to keep three legacy communities at Binks Forest; new Arden-area elementary to relieve crowding

Chris Garrison, the district's director of planning and intergovernmental relations, and demographer Jason Link walked board members through maps and enrollment projections. Garrison said the ABC reviewed three studies and recommended Study 15 B3 by a 9-3 vote because it provided the most relief to Binks Forest Elementary School, which the district said has been crowded. Committee chair Cynthia Becton and member Nancy Gribble joined staff for the workshop presentation.
Superintendent Michael Burke told the board he accepted the ABC's general recommendation but asked staff to make one amendment after reviewing public comment: move several "legacy communities" back into Binks Forest. Staff said the geographic area is large but includes about 55 students, and the change balanced enrollment between the two schools without overloading Binks Forest. Garrison said the adjustment addressed "almost all of the public comment that we received," and the district reported no speakers signed up on the boundary item by the time of the workshop.
Staff described next steps: the boundary change will be treated as rule making with a workshop and two readings. The board was told a first reading will be scheduled for the special meeting agenda that day and a second reading is expected at the board's March 12 meeting. Staff also said the district typically allows rising elementary-grade students (current fourth graders) to remain with their siblings at the current school; when that grandfathering is allowed, transportation responsibility traditionally rests with the parents.
Why it matters The new elementary opened earlier than planned to serve rapid growth in Arden. The superintendent's tweak aims to preserve historic community alignments at Binks Forest while still using the new school to relieve crowding.
Ending Staff said they will return with the formal boundary ordinance for first reading and a naming recommendation for the new school in a future meeting.
