Peabody City Council amends city code to raise mayor’s salary to $142,000

Councilor Gould proposed the increase, saying, “the mayor currently makes a hundred and $39,000,” and noting comparisons with nearby municipalities: “Lynn makes a hundred and 45,000. Beverly, a hundred and 45. Salem, a hundred and 50.” He said he proposed “a $3,000 raise on top of his $1.39.”
The change was presented as an amendment to the Code of the City of Peabody (adopted Jan. 9, 1986) that would delete the existing salary section and insert the new figure. When the ordinance language was read into the record, the text included both a line reading “Dollars 142,000” and a duplicated, likely transcription-misread figure rendered as “$142,142,000 dollars per annum.” Councilor McGinn advised the mover to ensure the motion’s amendatory language identified the old salary correctly before deleting it; Councilor Gould confirmed and moved the corrected ordinance language.
Councilor Gould also noted the size of the increase: “3,000 is about a 2.7% raise.” No councilor spoke in opposition. The roll-call vote recorded Councilors Peach, Gould, Gamache, Higgins, Mary Martin, Wilton, McGinn, Rosignal, Melville and Daigle as voting yes; the motion carried 10 to 0.
The ordinance text as read sets the new salary and states the effective date as July 1, 2025, "as provided by law." The meeting had no further business and the Committee of the Whole adjourned following the vote.
