Superintendent: two student essay winners named; Boys and Girls Club to open Linden site for 2025–26

Superintendent Bevans told the Hamilton City School Board that two students won the district’s Black History Month essay contest and will be invited to read their essays at the Feb. 24 work session. The winners are Ashlyn Blevins, a junior at Hamilton High School, and Sabina Peterson, a sixth grader at Riverview Elementary.
“I'm excited to see other people recognizing the talent of our writers and our students,” Bevans said, inviting the students to the work session.
Bevans also announced a community partnership expansion: the Boys and Girls Club will open a second school-based location at Linden Elementary for the 2025–26 school year. The superintendent said the program will be free to families who participate at the school site and that the club is also planning another freestanding site in the community.
“This partnership allows our students so many different things. It's not just childcare. It's homework help,” Bevans said, describing enrichment and hands-on activities the club will provide.
During public participation, Katie McBee, president of the Hamilton Classroom Teachers Association, thanked a board member for attending a building representative meeting and said staff feedback on that presentation was positive. The superintendent also noted ongoing coordination with the YMCA and district curriculum staff to align after-school programming.
Bevans closed by noting the board has recommended three candidates for new leadership positions; those personnel recommendations appeared later on the human-resources agenda for formal action.
No formal board action was required on the Boys and Girls Club announcement or the essay contest winners; both items were presented as information to the board.
