The Okaloosa County School Board will advertise a public hearing on a proposal to rescind a dually zoned attendance area that allows students from the north side of the bay to use district transportation to attend Destin Middle School.
Superintendent Chambers said the board will put the change before the public so families can respond. The item was presented on the consent agenda and staff asked the board to set a public hearing for adoption.
“We do have just over 30 students, that are taking advantage of transportation, from the North Side of the bridge to Destin Middle. 18 of those are eighth graders, so they'll be leaving,” Mr. Meyer, an operations staff member, told the board. He said the remaining students are in fifth, sixth and seventh grades and that transportation would continue this year and next year for those currently riding the buses.
Mr. Meyer said the district has coordinated with principals and has a communications plan ready pending board approval: a letter to affected parents, individual phone calls and meetings at Destin Meadow Bluewater Elementary to explain registration and options. He added controlled open enrollment may allow families who choose to provide their own transportation to continue at Destin Middle.
The public hearing will allow parents and community members to comment before the board takes a formal action at a future meeting.
