Finley Elementary hosts board meeting; principal and students highlight achievements as district outlines safety, academic and career plans

Finley Elementary hosted the White County Board of Education on Feb. 13, where Principal Rebecca Ryan and district leaders highlighted school- and district-level achievements and upcoming initiatives.
Ryan opened by welcoming the board and noted Finley has 417 students and “we currently have 1 comprehensive development class that has 17 students,” and she said the school houses the majority of the district’s English-language learners. Ryan recognized cafeteria staff, the school nurse and custodial teams for day-to-day contributions and announced that the school was selected as one of six nominees the state may submit to the National Blue Ribbon Schools program because its English and math achievement scores ranked in the top 15% in Tennessee.
District director Mister Trumbauer updated the board on academic, safety and workforce initiatives. He told members he spent time at state education conferences and that the district is monitoring legislative items including the vouchers, recess time, TSSAA transfer rules and cell-phone policies. He reported lock and safety-project work at several schools, continued monthly safety-team meetings and that ParentSquare continues to serve as the district’s communication platform. Trumbauer said the district is exploring a potential collaboration with TCAT Upper Cumberland to create an innovative program at White County High School, using braided TCAT and district grant funds to expand career-technical opportunities.
Student representatives presented a long list of accomplishments: FFA proficiency placements (12 proficiency applications, all placing in the top 6 statewide/regionally) with named winners; winners from the school science fair (top category winners and overall winners who may advance to the Upper Cumberland regional fair at Tennessee Tech); band and honor-band placements; and student-led efforts, such as a clothing-and-hygiene closet pop-up that distributed donated items to students.
