Census edges up at Stephenson County nursing center as HVAC work completes on north end; washer replacement, bed availability discussed

Administrator Marcos told the committee the facility’s average monthly census for January was 47 and that the facility’s census reached a high point since he started in August; the count in the open-session report for the meeting was 43 residents.
Marcos provided a payer breakdown for the census figures: three traditional Medicare A (short-term rehab) residents, one Medicare replacement plan, 22 residents under Medicaid long-term plans, and two private-pay residents receiving hospice (these numbers were presented by the administrator as of the report date). He also reported nine total admissions in January, an increase of one from the prior month, and said most admissions are short-term rehab-to-home referrals.
On facilities work, Marcos said HVAC contract work that began in November–December is essentially complete on the northern (Birchwood) end of the building and that those rooms are now habitable. He said the south-end portion of the HVAC project has started; administrators relocated residents to inner, habitable areas of the building while major ductwork and air-handler work were underway to keep residents in safe, heated spaces.
Marcos also raised maintenance items: the facility has three commercial washers, and replacement of a failing unit would cost about $15,000 while repairs were estimated at $10,000–$12,000. He said the committee will receive a cost estimate next month if the committee wants to pursue replacement.
