District to review specialized curriculum for students with moderate-to-severe disabilities

The board received an information item describing the planned review of new curriculum materials designed for students with moderate-to-severe disabilities. Staff said the materials are already used by county programs and that the district plans to align its classes across elementary, middle and high sites.
Ken Miller (district staff) said the review will cover courses at Mesa Elementary and Pinion Hills (grades 3-5), three core classes at Quail Valley Middle School (grades 6-8) and a Serrano High School course aimed at alternate diplomas. Miller said the current adopted curriculum is not as appropriate for these students and that the proposed materials include applied-behavior-analysis techniques, progress-monitoring tools, multi-tiered supports and real-world applications.
Staff said the review will follow the districtadoption process: materials will be made available for public and staff inspection, teachers and families may review content, and the district will return with a formal recommendation to adopt if the review supports it. Miller also said the materials align with county resources and are in use in other districts, which can ease transitions for students moving between systems.
No action was taken; staff said they would begin the review and expected to return with a recommendation to adopt on a future agenda after collecting teacher and family feedback.
